BIOGRAPHY
Devin Farney (b. 1983) is a composer/pianist based out of California. He primarily focuses on composition and has had works premiered in the United States, France, and Japan, but is additionally a pianist versed in various styles.
In May 2006 Devin obtained his Bachelors of Music Composition from the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music, graduating with highest honors. His primary instructors were Dr. Francois Rose and Dr. Robert Coburn for composition, and Prof. Frank Wiens for piano. He is currently a Masters candidate at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where his primary instructor is Dan Becker.
Devin is a member of the academic honors society Phi Kappa Phi and of the music honors society Pi Kappa Lambda. In addition to this, Devin is a Presser Scholar (2005) and was recognized by Who's Who in American Universities (2006). His works have received several notable recognizitions and awards, including a performance at the 2008 Fresno New Music Festival, two honorable mentions at the Minnesota Orchestra's Composer Institute (2007 and 2008), and his piece P.U.L.S.E. for marimba solo was a finalist at the 2008 ZMF New Music Composition Contest. His music has also been featured by the American Viola Society.
During the summer of 2006 Devin was a participant in the summer session for musicians held by the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France. Soonafter he attended the biannual international new music festival held in Darmstadt, Germany. He attended lectures and seminars given by numerous composers including Helmut Lachenmann and Toshio Hosokawa. During this summer Devin had the opportunity to have private lessons with European composers Francois Paris, Allain Gaussin, and Louis Andriessen.
Devin's piano studies have included the following composers: J.S. Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Scriabin, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel, Prokofiev, Bartok, Barber, and many original works. He has additionally studied and performed jazz piano in the contexts of both solo and combo settings.
Both a student and a teacher, Devin has given private piano and guitar lessons to individuals of all ages, background, and musical expertise for years. He has also been hired by people across the country to do various transcriptions and arrangements for orchestras, musical arrangements, etc.
